This course provides a comprehensive exploration of the fundamental principles of matter, including the distinction between pure substances and mixtures. Students will investigate physical and chemical properties, gaining an understanding of how these properties determine the behaviour and interactions of different substances. The course also explores the concept of chemical reactions versus physical changes, and provides students with the tools to identify and analyze evidence of a chemical reaction.

Safety practices in handling and working with chemicals are emphasized throughout the course to ensure a secure learning environment. Students will also gain familiarity with the periodic table, exploring elements, their symbols, atomic numbers, and atomic masses. The course delves into the trends observed in the periodic table, both down a group and across a period, highlighting the significance of these trends in understanding the properties and behaviour of elements.

Furthermore, students will explore the building blocks of matter, including atoms, isotopes, and ions. The course examines the formation and properties of ionic compounds, distinguishing between different types and their unique characteristics. Students will also gain knowledge of the nomenclature for naming ionic compounds.

Additionally, the course covers covalent compounds, investigating their types and properties. Students will learn the nomenclature for naming covalent compounds and understand the principles behind it.

By the end of this course, students will have developed a solid understanding of the classification of matter, including pure substances and mixtures, as well as the principles governing chemical reactions and physical changes. They will be equipped with knowledge about the periodic table, elements, and their properties, and will understand the trends observed within the table. Students will also have a comprehensive understanding of atoms, isotopes, ions, and the nomenclature for naming both ionic and covalent compounds, providing them with a strong foundation in chemistry and the ability to analyze and interpret the behaviour of different substances.
